Biography
Charles McCrory is a Professor of Chemistry and Macromolecular Science and Engineering. He earned dual B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics from Indiana University, where he conducted surface science research with Prof. George Ewing. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University in 2010 under the mentorship of Prof. Christopher Chidsey studying electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and alcohol oxidation, and conducted postdoctoral studies with Prof. Jonas Peters at CalTech from 2010-2011 exploring electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution by molecular catalysts. After his postdoctoral research, he joined the research staff of the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), an Energy Innovation Hub of the US Department of Energy focused on the development of integrated solar-fuels technology. At JCAP, he supervised a research team developing and implementing protocols for evaluating the activity of solid-state heterogeneous electrocatalytic materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2015, where his research focuses on developing electrochemical systems to convert industrial waste chemicals to value-added fuels and products.
