Support for Energy Research
The Institute for Energy Solutions offers a wide variety of services and resources to support energy research across campus. Most proposal development services are offered free-of-charge to individual researchers and project teams, including:
- Organization of a convening event for research team development
- Research design development and proposal writing support
- Project management during proposal development and writing process
- Introduction to/engagement with relevant IES Research Communities
- Navigation through resources and tools available to U-M researchers
IES staff may also be written into project budgets to provide continued support for funded proposals by staff members with relevant energy expertise. These services may include project management, facilitation, community engagement, data analysis, and qualitative research services.

Funding Opportunity Tracking
IES maintains records of active and continuous/recurring funding opportunities (including relevant NSF programs and BAAs) that are relevant for energy-related research.
Energy researchers are encouraged to bookmark and review these pages to stay updated of upcoming opportunities. Passwords for the pages can be found in the IES monthly newsletter or by reaching out to an IES team member at [email protected].
Timeline Development for Michigan Energy Case Studies
Michigan’s current energy landscape is built upon years of complex histories and stakeholder interactions. Staff at the Institute for Energy Solutions help researchers, students, policymakers, and community members navigate these histories through development of comprehensive timelines. Energy experts may request timeline development for an upcoming project or for navigation of prominent energy issues.
Example: Washtenaw County Datacenter Timeline
The purpose of this resource is to help the public navigate and better understand the recent history of datacenter development in Washtenaw County. It is intended for use by researchers, community members, policymakers, and media organizations in their efforts to trace the factors and circumstances contributing to/inhibiting local datacenter development.
For Research Teams
IES Early Energy Research Team Support
The Institute for Energy Solutions offers funding to support meeting and early proposal development efforts for newly formed research teams. Applications for funding can be submitted through our funding request form.
Eligible expenses include:
- Food and drink for team meetings (Max $15/person)
- Parking and travel costs for external partners located in SE Michigan attending team meetings in Ann Arbor
- Parking, travel, and food/drink costs for team meetings occurring at external partner sites in SE Michigan
