Biography

Kelly Askew is the Niara Sudarkasa Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She is author of Performing the Nation: Swahili Music and Cultural Politics in Tanzania (2002), and co-director of the award-winning documentary film Maasai Remix (2019). She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Harvard University. Current projects focus on rural energy access, postsocialist poetics, pastoralism, post-independence African music and art, and land rights in Tanzania.
