Professor Downar’s work centers on the safety analysis of nuclear plants. He spent time on the faculty at Purdue and UC Berkeley before accepting his current position at the University of Michigan in 2008. Specifically, Downar and his group have developed computer codes for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in order to certify safety performance of nuclear plants across the US as well as throughout the world. Currently, Downar and his group are also developing the next-generation code for the Department of Energy called MPACT – or the Michigan PArallel Characteristics Transport Code.
